Valves that perform multiple duties are called Multiport Valve. Multiport valves are classified as special-purpose valves.

There are three main types of pool filtering systems: cartridge, sand and diatomaceous earth (DE).
Sand and DE filters mainly use multiport valves to help wash or back flush the filter media.
